There are guides like https://www.htpcguides.com/spin-down-and...pberry-pi/ which use hdparm or hd-idle.
If you read through the comments on that entry you'll see that it doesn't always work---sometimes it's the drive model, sometimes it's the USB-to-drive controller chipset.
Also, you'll find elsewhere in the InterWeb that people have had trouble with their drive spinning down while they're using it, or with spinning it back up in time for MPD to be happy.
You can certainly try it yourself. Should hdparm be incorporated in moOde? That's up to Tim.
