Looks like the Raspberry Pi Linux team has bumped to the 5.4.y kernel branch.

https://github.com/Hexxeh/rpi-firmware/commits/master

There are zillions of fixes and updates in this branch and so I'll be monitoring things to determine when its best for our nice project to switch over :-)

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that switched to 5.4 on a moOde 6.5.y build.

Kernel 5.4 thread on the Raspberry Pi forum:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewt...p?t=269769

A quick test after an rpi-update and it is all working for me.

Cheers,

Phil
Ran rpi-update on an RPi0W, RPi3A, RPi3B+, and RPi4B, all running moOde 6.5.1.

All updated nicely: Raspbian 10.3 | 5.4.35-v7+ #1314 | armv7l (32-bit)

So far I've listened only to the RPi3B+ via USB/aptX to Sennheiser BT headphone and the RPi4B via USB Khadas Tone Board. Seem to be working ok.

Regards,
Kent
Cool :-)

@philrandal that's an interesting read. Looks like a lot of good A/V stuff in 5.4.y

Rpi3b+/TerraBerry I2SDAC, 6.5.1 updated. All OK so far.
The best post in the RP Forum thread about moving the kernel to 5.4 (herafter, "TheThread"):

Quote:Easy to be spooked by the jump from 4.x to 5.x but actually "major" version increments are not necessarily any more significant than "minor" increments. The only real distinction is that a bottle of whisky changes hands between Greg K-H and Linus T on the "major" bumps. I only learned this recently: no doubt it's old news to the kernel sages here!

I should think the possible edge cases would be
  • external WiFi adapters - but I see that near the end of TheThread, MrEngMan reports that "8188eu drivers are now available for 5.4.35+ #1314." I know we have at least one user using an adapter with that WiFi chip.
  • vendor I2S drivers - as I said, I've not tested any DAC HATs, but @jonners post here is encouraging.
  • SPI usage - only 'cuz on TheThread, DougieLawson has been reporting trouble with some SPI display.
  • the Allo boards
I should have noted that the RPi3B+ I updated is running the moOde local display and my framebuffer-based splash screen software on a 7in Raspbian Touchscreen Display (which uses the Display Serial Interface). Seems to be working fine.

Just my 2-cents worth.

Kent
