Solved: Problem playing High Rez File
#21
Is the audio distortion present when playing the same files from a USB stick?
What power supply are u using?

Feel free to zip up some files and PM me a download link. My SIG is running a Katana.

I did not made some extend testing with USB stick, but the sound from USB stick is absolutly perfect !

I am using the Shanti Power supply.

The audio distortion is present on every audio file (whatever the frequency is) when playing files from DLNA server.
I doubt that sending you an audio file will help but I can do that if you wish

Ideally I should test another USBrige sig unit to clarify if this is an isolated problem due to a faulty unit (hardware) or
if it is a general bug, but audiophonic my reseller only propose to send them back the unit for testing it, but if the problem
is due to driver/ or software intergration it will be useless.

If there is no distortion when source is USB stick it would suggest the problem is external to the SIG, Power supply or moOde software.

One possibility is that noise is being injected via the Ethernet cable. The way to determine that is to use a WiFi adapter and see if the noise disappears.

Regarding software issues, one of the earlier posts showed the port speed of the Ethernet connection was 100Mb/s and not 1000Mb/s as I would have expected. http://moodeaudio.org/forum/showthread.p...3#pid15053 This could indicate some sort of compatibility issue between the Ethernet port on the SIG and your Switch, or some other network issue thats not showing up in the stats.

Here is output from eth0 on my SIG. Its connected to my ASUS Router's built-in Switch. Note Speed: 1000Mb/s

Code:
pi@rp3:~ $ ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]

One other log to examine for clues is the kernel boot log

Since I don't have the Allo product I didn't know what to expect. Now I see the Allo website claims a Gigabit Ethernet port...but also claims it's been "tested at 330Mbs". (Curious; makes it sound like it's an RPi3B+ with its USB2.0 controller limitation.)

You hasn't told us any details of your Ethernet LAN, saying just "connected to the same switch." What is this switch?

I also don't see anywhere a description of the hardware running the JRiver Media Center 25 software. What's this hardware? What's its Ethernet interface?

The devil is in the details.

Kent

The diff between the 3B+ and SIG CM3+ Ethernet implementation is that the SIG provides a dedicated bus for Ethernet controller while the 3B+ has a shared bus for Ethernet and USB controllers. Its same throughput rating of 330 mbps but you get all of it on the SIG while the 3B+ provides up to 330 depending on whether other USB devices are using bus bandwidth.

Quick reminder:  JRiver is running on Intel Nuc I5 (Windows 10) / Gigabit Ehernet connected to a 4 channel Switch of my FREEBOX
FREEBOX is my router provided by my Internet Access provider connected to my Netgear switch = home switch distribution
Netgear switch model is Prosafe -JGS516 (non manageable switch)

I did check the ethernet connection of the 3 components above involved- The led (speed indicator) for the netgear was yellow = 100Mb for the SIG
After unplug / replug of the connection the led for the SIG is green (1Gb)

The new ethernet test results are

Code:
pi@moode:~ $ ethtool eth0

Audio distortion (scratches) are still there after this opération

Tomorrrow I will test with a new Power supply (not a shanti one) and also with a WIFI /Usb connector ...

thanks again for your help on that tricky problem

I'd suggest Comfast CF-912AC. The driver for this excellent WiFi adapter is included in moOde :-).Note, avoid the newer 913AC model. It was unstable in my testing and it requires a different driver.

Right angle adapter if desired.

One other troubleshooting step to consider would be to remove the ProSafe switch from the connection path and run Ethernet cables directly from the DLNA box and from the SIG to your Router.

If after this test + the PSU swap + running WiFi there is still noise then I think there would be a case to be made that it's some sort of hardware issue in the SIG's Ethernet component. This assumes you have ruled out an issue in the box thats serving the music files via DLNA.

I had an issue that the Jriver's DLNA server was converting everything to MP3. I needed to go the the Media server settings and set the DLNA output to "Original" then everything sounded great.

Hope this helps,

@Botte

When you set mode= original you can't use the JRiver DSP (in case you want to use parametric EQ, convolution files .. or any
  process .

When you set  mode = Specified output format  OR Mode = specified output format only when necessary then you can
choose between : PCM L16; PCM L24; PCM 16; PCM 24; MP3 Low Bandwith; MP3 Medium bandwith; MP3 High Bandwith
In these cases you can use the JRiver DSP

My mode is PCM 24 and moode player prompt 192 Khz- 24 bit correcly (the DSP is Off= no conversion, no equalisation, ...)

My audio "scratches"is very different from quality related to differences between MP3 and Flac

Anyway thanks for your contribution I will also try Mode = original and keep you informed about the result (any track i good to follow)

Finding a problem when you don't know where to look can be frustrating not to mention time-consuming.

Random thoughts in no particular order:

1. If you suspect JRiver Media Center or its settings, you could try bypassing it by bringing up a straight DLNA server and feeding it some 24-bit/192KHz tracks. AFAIK, there is a DLNA server built into Windows 10. I've never tried it but I know there are HowTos on theWeb. Or, you could try bypassing DLNA all together by switching to the moOde UI and playing HiRes tracks via SMB or NFS, either from the Nuc or from another local host.

2. Have you tried swapping Ethernet cables one at a time? I've had some go bad either because they were crunched under furniture (damaging their shields) or because their connectors were damaged.

3. Have you tried Tim's suggestion of plugging both server and player into the 4-port switch on your FREEBOX?

4. Similarly, have you tried plugging them both into your Netgear switch (but see below)?

5. I had good luck using Netgear switches in my lab back in the day but things can go wrong.
-Have you tried plugging into different ports?
-Have you tried to turn off your JGS516's support for energy efficient Ethernet (a feature I see on the datasheet)?
-Have you tried turning off or adjusting your JGS516's QoS support (also on the datasheet).

6. All I know about the FREEBOX is what I just read in a Wikipedia article. Some of the functional description suggests it has some DLNA services of its own (I know my Verizon FiOS box does). Is there any possibility you have some interference going on there due to polling, service requests, etc.? Any other possible interference do to QoS support, etc.?

Some of these ideas would seem to be counter-indicated by your lack of dropped packets, and some would seem pretty far-fetched, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Kent
