Solved: Album tracks indexed eight times
#1
I have just noticed that moOde has indexed the 16 tracks eight times for Fleetwood Mac Greatest Hits. There are 16 tracks on the album and moOde lists 128 tracks, starting over again each time after track 16. As far as I can see, it is behaving properly with all other albums.

I have tried moving the album from the NAS where it is normally stored, regenerating the music library so that moOde "forgets" about it, then restoring the album to the NAS, and regenerating the music library once more. When that's done, I once again have 128 tracks (8 X 16) listed.

I have checked the track tags using Mp3tag and cannot spot any obvious anomalies.

I'm running version 6.6.0 and see the same problem on two different Pi-2B devices.

Any help would be gratefully received.

What kind of files are they? Do you have any cue sheet (.cue) or playlist (.m3u, .pls, m3u8) files in the same location that might be causing these duplicates?

The tracks are in FLAC format and were ripped from a CD using dBpoweramp CD Ripper which is the program that I normally use. There are no cue sheets or playlists stored with the tracks on my NAS. I have not deliberately created either but might have inadvertently created the latter within moOde. If that is the case, where would playlists be stored and how would I go about deleting them?

Many thanks.

I just meant files in the same location as the flac files really.
Not sure then, if two systems are seeing the same issue I would always suspect the source files in the case of wonky metadata but duplicates are odd.
Have you tried clearing the library tag cache (Configure > Library > [Clear]) and deleting your web browser's cache?

I have to agree with you that the problem lies with the source files, rather than with the players since both players exhibit the same problem.

I tried clearing the library tag cache and the browser cache, but to no avail.

I might try re-ripping the CD and replace the files on the NAS with new copies. I will backup the original files just in case somebody asks me to take a look at them for any reason.

Too soon to re-rip. Folks have also seen issues with, for example, OS X resource forks or with Synology's Media service (whatever it's called).

A full directory listing of one of your problem albums could be useful. From the command line, navigate to the directory for Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits, say, and execute the Linux command "ls -la" and show us what it says.

As well, it would be useful to see the output from mediainfo for one of the tracks that's repeatedly indexed. We've learned mediainfo isn't a perfect tool for examining metadata but it's a great start.

I deleted the album from my NAS, re-ripped the CD, copied the files to the NAS and regenerated the library on both moOde devices. The problem still persisted

I then ripped the CD to FLAC files using Exact Audio Copy instead of dBpoweramp. I replaced the files on the NAS with the newly ripped files and regenerated the library on both devices. That did not work either.

The track listing of the CD does not reveal any peculiar hidden multimedia directories or anti-copy mechanisms

There must be a ghost in the machine.

I'm guessing that you have 8 albums with the title "Greatist Hits." I reported the same issue on another thread. Per Tim Curtis, it is to be fixed in the next update.

As you've suggested, there's no smoking guns here so far. The metadata looks pretty minimal and straight forward.

It would have been helpful to include the -a option on the 'ls -l' command so that any hidden files and directories which might be present would have been displayed too.

Your listing suggests this directory is on some kind of Windows share, with which I have no experience. Is there any possibility there's more than one path to the directory?

One last thought and then I'm out of suggestions.

While it wouldn't explain as many as eight-fold indexing, it's easy accidentally to stick an ID3v2.x tag on the front of a FLAC file, possibly with conflicting metadata. This is not a legitimate FLAC file according to the spec and various softwares handle it in different ways. For example, moOde (e.g., MPD) is able to play the file but does interesting things with the metadata.

One quick check from the command line is to run the file command on a track file or two.

Here's what file reports for a FLAC file with metadata only in a VORBIS_COMMENT tag, which is the specified method,

Code:
pi@moode:/mnt/SDCARD/Stereo Test $ file LRMonoPhase4.flac
LRMonoPhase4.flac: FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 48 kHz, 1860560 samples

Here's what file reports for a FLAC file I created with a VORBIS_COMMENT tag and with a prepended ID3v2.4 tag,

Code:
kreed@T520:~/Music/SamplesForGenreTesting/FuriousFreakID3v2.4/VORBIS+ID3$ file ff-16b-2c-44100hz.id3.flac
ff-16b-2c-44100hz.id3.flac: Audio file with ID3 version 2.4.0, contains:FLAC audio bitstream data, 16 bit, stereo, 44.1 kHz, 8250520 samples

Good luck.

Regards,
Kent
