I've been flashing uSD cards and USB thumbdrives from moOde/DietPi/Volumio/RPiOS/you-name-it disk images with Belena Etcher in Win10 and Linux Mint for several years with nary a problem. Worked first time, every time.

Well it seems that flashing is the easy part. Then it seems that pi needs also some kind of firmware update to boot from a usb (in my case an ssd with a sata-usb cable. Is it so? In any case when I put it directly even to my latest pi4 8gb nothing happens.

Yes the Pi4 needs a firmware update to boot from USB.  That is explained on the Raspberry Pi Foundation site.

and more here..

Though I think it may still be beta so if you're not linux competent you might want to wait for the official RPI upgrade...?
Unless you know exactly what you're doing then you risk bricking your Pi.

USB to SATA/ssd drive should work provided the drive is adequately powered.
This is recommended to be from an external power supply and not the Pi.

Note that it has been reported that not all ssd drives will work as boot devices....not a MoOde or RPI thing but hardware manufacturers configurations.

Sorry post deleted, just noticed you are running a pi 4.

Well now that you realise the issue I would ask you to read again my mail of 14 Oct and let me know your thoughts. Currently pi development reminds me the times of Windows 3.1. The only way for ordinary people to use it is if bright people in informatics makes these hardware usable for those ordinary people. Ordinary people cannot turn massively into information gurus. moOde software and Raspberry Pi are not turnkey platforms and thus require some amount of technical knowledge and learning curve. I periodically remind users that moOde is a great way to learn some Linux :-)

The best way to help improve moOde is to be specific about what you want and make a strong case for it to be implemented. Our project is Open Source and this means that the software can be continuously improved by users and developers that volunteer their time and expertise.

Oh I hope we don't go that way. "This is the way I like so I'm going to make you all do it that way too, call it "intuitive" and refuse to let anyone do it differently".

You'll notice as well the huge difference in cost between Apple products and Moode on a Pi?

It’s with great pleasure that I use almost exclusively Moode for listening to music. The latest 6.7.1 release brought further compatibility and stability.

Concerning future upgrades, I find that the use of the microSD card for loading the system represents (at least for me) the main issue. This is because an audiophile fanless pi4 is getting quite hot and sooner or later the sd card is dead. In addition, changing the SD card in a boxed pi (for a different use) is a real pain requiring in most cases special tools. Last but not least, if someone wants to accommodate a lot of high-resolution music files in a single media together with the system this is not possible given the limited space of the reasonably priced sd cards.

Now my million dollar question: Would it be technically possible (as in the case of Volumio) to see one day in Moode the possibility of transferring the system in a USB connected Hard Disk and get rid of the micro SD after installation?

Thanks for considering this question.

Dear Cofot 28,
MoOde CAN boot from an USB disk drive so it will be possible to bring up your system from an USB hard drive instead of USB.
There is a configuration setting under system where you can enable the boot from USB.
So far the good news ..

My experience with high quality Audio is that the sound quality gets worse when you play music from an USB driveas your Raspberry has to do extra work to use the disk drive.

My advise is to play your music from a network drive (NAS).

Stay healthy and keep enjoying music !Cor van Zundert.
