Hi
after using moode since a few weeks, I am thinking of putting my old records on my NAS.
I would prefer lossless output and have an (old) Thorens MM turntable with a new pick-up (correct translation?).
I am looking for a phono pre-amp with an USB output and would use Audacity (unless told otherwise) either on Windows 10 or a MAC.

Which pre-amp can be recommended ?
Searching the www I rarely find any info about the soundcard in these pre-amps ......

Thanks for any feedback

Depending on how many albums you want to capture, I'd consider Vinyl Studio as opposed to Audacity. It's much slicker, and the feature that really speeds things up is it's ability to split sides into songs, lookup the album on online databases and find the song names for each individual song fille. I've done this process manually on Audacity and it works fine, but you don't want to do it for years to come. I suppose my tolerance might be to use Audacity for 20-30 albums but not many more.

Good point
I'd say about 200 album - which is some months work - so software is another topic.

Thx I will look into that too

Hardware

I have found Rega Fono Mini A2D - Pro-Ject Phono Box USB and Dynavox UPR-2.0

anybody knows these?

I do not know them since I use an external phono preamp (Hgaerman Bugle) and an external soundcard (Steinberg UR22 MkII) rather than a all-in-one unit. I think, based on my experience, that using a unit that converts into 192/24 is a good idea. Of course, the analog signal doesn't need that kind of dynamic range and temporal resolution, but it allows pop and click removal software to work better with little or no impact on the basic sound quality. It's the clicks and pops that have the high rise times so you can set the detection thresholds high enough that they don't pick up the music frequency signal. If your LPs are pristine, this is less of an issue.

None of those will do more than 16-bit 48 kHz A-D conversions (there is a Mk2 of the Rega just released but I couldn't find any specifications regarding it's A-D quality).

That bit depth and sample rate may be perfectly fine your purpose, but if you want to go down the path of extra processing as per @Skip Pack you may find it limiting. I work in restoring audio and find that 24 bit 96 kHz is more than sufficient for high quality jobs.

What are you using for a phono preamplifier now? Perhaps all you need is an A-D converter for capturing the preamp output into your computer. There are plenty of low-price devices available with reasonable quality that will out-perform the A-Ds in the Rega, etc.
Korg have an interesting device that will record and convert analogue LPs (even up to DSD if that's your thing)
Not sure pricing in your neck of the woods but here it has been offered new from the importer for Half Retail ! for the last few months...not sure if that is still current.

Hi

currently I am using a Pro-Ject MaiA Pre. I am satisfied with the quality only do not like, that the output level of the turntable is much higher than the one from the moode Pi - therefore I was thinking of a preamp, where I could adjust the level of the turntable and use it too for digitalizing my old records.

I have no idea, if grabbing the analog output signal of the MaiA and recording this will result in a sufficient quality. I would hate to play about 200 vinyl, optimize quality, reduce clips and cut and tag them and have "low" quality.

Korg is too expensive (at least I think so at the moment) - I had thought of spending sth between 100 and 200 € / $ for hardware.

Here's a thought....HiFiBerry have recently released a Pi-Hat with and ADC.

Yet to confirm if this would work but using a Pi, stock Raspbian,Audacity, the ADC (which has switchable gain and may be suitable for direct connection to a turntable) and a usb hard-drive it may be possible for very little outlay to record LPs.

The files would need to have riaa correction run either on the Pi if it proved capable or on your desktop machine.
I currently use this plugin in Audacity...

Thx for this great idea
Maybe sb knows about a MM preamp Pi-Hat ... however I have contacted HiFiBerry asking if the turntable can be connected direct to the analog input.
As mentioned in my previous post I have no idea which quality the "out" signal of my pre-amp has. If that would be ok I could connect the Pi to this signal and record my collection.
