Solved!
Posted in diyaudio as suggested and after some suggestions from the guys, a fella called Tim Curtis told me to bump the kernel:
sudo PRUNE_MODULES=1 rpi-update
And that solved the problem in the pi4 completely. (did not work with the zero though, but nevermind)

As usual, the diyaudio thread wandered on and off the subject of your post but it contains one of the best analogies I've ever heard concerning hardware/software interfaces (USB in this case):
