For renderers:
1. The client app on smartphone, desktop, etc controls volume
2. When renderer connects moOde configures its volume to 0dB so that when client is at 0dB the overall volume is 0dB.
What you will see when a renderer connects is that ALSA volume if present is set to 0dB and CamillaDSP volume if in use is set to 0dB.

I am noticing that while Spotify volume control does work with camilladsp, the level is significantly lower than streaming radio stations. is the right solution to fiddle with the Spotify default and max volume until they are close?
or should the volume range always stay the same?

There is a "Volume control" section in Spotify Connect settings that may be of use. Maybe try changing the curve or range .
