If you suspect that the collection size is causing the slowness try copying half the tracks to a local disk and test with just that disk and see if performance improves.

I would tend to say it could very likely be network speed issues.
I have about 5000 tracks with separate albumart files. The Moode Boxes that are wifi
would see issues so I wound up putting the files locally and it cleaned up the issues.
But I still see some album art issues (slow to change etc) on the units that are on the slower WI-FI
ink (Via a repeater) The ones that are hard-wired to the network are snappy and without issues.

Made a 1gb cable, switched to eth0, 75% problems gone
