Yes, the problem is exactly that.
To fix it we might need TWO coverview use cases:

1. what to show during playback (and if / when to activate such view) -- useful for cover art view

2. what to show when idle (and if / when to activate such view) -- useful for clock view

Something like the following?

Playback display (No, Album art, Digital clock, Analog clock, Analog clock - sweep) - activates immediately upon PLAY. Does nothing upon PAUSE or end of playback

Idle display (No, Album art, Digital clock, Analog clock, Analog clock - sweep) activates after Idle delay when in PAUSE or end of playback

Idle delay (Never, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes)

Right, currently the "Timed display" prefs options operates like a screen saver. IIRC it was done that way to support the Digital/Analog clock options.

For local display there is the "Automatic display" prefs option. This won't affect connected clients. The idea here is that you can have CoverView displayed on your TV while your client (phone, tablet, desktop) has the full WebUI for control. You can also toggle CoverView off/on on local display via the Peripheral Config screen. Again, connected clients are not affected.

Yes, I remember the timed display was introduced explicitly for the clock ;-)

I try to stay out of discussions like this---never had an eye or head for good UI design.

Nevertheless, if we do this I'd like to have the choice of my own static image in addition to @Nutul's suggested choice of "No, Album art, Digital clock, Analog clock, Analog clock - sweep" to display when the player is idle.

Not important for me for a connected client, but for a player with local display in family room, etc., it'd be nice to have. Don't need a player to be a digital picture frame that cycles through a collection (similar to what my cable TV does at idle) but I'll bet my SO would differ now that she has a brand new grandbaby!

Regards,
Kent

Yep, that will indeed be a nice touch.
(of course, fix the inconsistency: on empty queue there is no  cover art to display, of course... need to decide whether PAUSE is considered IDLE or not, probably yes)

Ah! Now I understand. Different display and control devices makes sense. I knew I was being thick.

I just recently bought the official 7" touchscreen and also was confused by the options at first, just like @oli5967.

My standard use case is as described by you: I typically use a connected client (phone/notebook) to contol the WebUI while the local touchscreen is running in CoverView at the same time. I especially like the large font size for track/album title & artist name in the "wide" layout setting as they are well readable from some distance. So that is already working with the current set of options ("Automatic display").

Yet I also like to use the WebUI directly on the touchscreen now and then, e.g. when the phone is not at hand. It would actually be cool if there was a timed display option which would reset (just the) local display back to CoverView after some time, without the need to always toggle it back by hand (when the music is already playing). It would also be beneficial to have a short activation time for that purpose (like for "Screen blank" where it is possible to select "10 Secs", "20 Secs" and "30 Secs", for "Timed display" the minimum currently is "1 Min").

I also see the second/different use case where e.g. the clock display is just used as "screen saver" and activates after some time when nothing is playing ("Timed display"), although I personally prefer to switch off the display ("Screen blank = 1 Min") instead. Note that also for this purpose it would be cool, if there was an option to activate the "screen saver" just for the local display.

Best regards
Jens

The additional use cases while valid could get us into the "Too many options" scenario.

Yep, I was just thinking the same... if it has to be done, for sure it needs some thought refactoring.
It is not hard, but it must be consistent.

Definitely not a thought for tonight... maybe tomorrow after the mourning world-saver coffee... Big Grin
