Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - aknaggbaugh - 07-15-2019 I've been meaning to get a Pi 4 bought for a while now. The 4GB ones are still out of stock probably until at least next month. The question is: is it worth waiting? My main reason for wanting to upgrade is the USB3 and gigabit ethernet, and obviously Moode runs well enough on previous Pis with 1GB of RAM. I know more RAM is generally good, but are there any features planned that would actually benefit from the extra or is it pretty safe to stick with the 2GB model? Or is even that overkill and the 1GB is actually optimal for a Moode build. RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - TheOldPresbyope - 07-15-2019 @aknaggbaugh Optimality is a state of mind On an RPi3B+ 1GB memory) with moOde 5.3.1 running I'm seeing nearly 712MB available memory (reported by the top command). I'd expect the 1GB RPi4B would be fine. Just 'cuz I'm a new-gadget junkie and have projects in mind I've ordered one of each (from three different vendors I find to be reliable). The 2GB model should be here Wednesday; the other two orders...someday. Regards, Kent RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - Tim Curtis - 07-15-2019 Best performance is 3B+, 3A+ and 4B, and these models support 5GHz WiFi band :-) RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - StivVid - 11-04-2019 (07-15-2019, 01:04 PM)Tim Curtis Wrote: Best performance is 3B+, 3A+ and 4B, and these models support 5GHz WiFi band :-) I actually have the same question. I was wondering which Raspberry Pi 4 to get since it comes in 3 different flavors of RAM. There is a 1GB version, a 2GB version, and a 4GB version. I think what the OP was asking about is how much RAM is optimal for the best performance from Moode? RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - DRONE7 - 11-04-2019 Here is a Pi4 with 4GB of ram....running MoOde 6.3.0 .....webradio....14 hours...(with 2 version updates happening in the background) Code: %Cpu(s): 0.6 us, 1.1 sy, 0.0 ni, 97.6 id, 0.8 wa, 0.0 hi, 0.0 si, 0.0 st 97.6% idle.... 150.1MB memory used... 3618.5 available Memory so, 4GB might be overkill... 2 might be plenty, and 1 would work fine. All depends on what other uses you might put the Pi4 to... if just a dedicated MoOde player then 4GB will idle along unused... If using the Pi sometimes as a Kodi player then 4GB would be useful. The big benefits seem to be the separated usb and networking busses..... and that's mostly independent of ram. The drawbacks are all thermal.... it runs hot and probably needs some active cooling.... Out of curiosity... I have a topping DX3 Pro on the way. Have you tried to use an external DAC with the newly designed USB on the Pi 4? I know people have had problems with noise and popping from USB in older Pi's. RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - DRONE7 - 11-05-2019 Yes, I've used XMOS XCORE-200 XU216 and ESS sabre 9028 Dac. https://www.diyinhk.com/shop/audio-kits/164-xmos-384khz-dxd-dsd256-high-quality-usb-type-c-to-i2sdsdspdif-pcb.html and Perreaux Audiant 80i with onboard Sabre Dac https://www.perreaux.com/products/integrated-amplifiers/80i No 'noise or popping' but I have never had those problems even with older Pi and MoOde via usb :-) What I do find is the Pi4 is much more responsive and stable especially when streaming . I bought the 4GB Pi4 as I have other projects that will require the extra ram... such as a ram-play experiment and trialling the HiFiBerry ADC to rip LPs . Easier and more cost effective to get the extra ram now than find I need it later and have to buy yet another Pi... That said, I am buying up Pi2Bs as people discard them for Pi3 and 4.... a Pi2B is a solid performer if you don't need wifi and runs super cool. ;-) RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - owagott - 05-04-2020 i use the first Raspberry and it works fine. Code: top - 13:05:13 up 11 min, 1 user, load average: 0.34, 0.58, 0.45 RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - Lizard_King - 05-04-2020 The RPI4 when used with a hat DAC makes more noise so an RPI3B+ sounds better. the king is to use the Allo USBridge signature. RE: Question: which Raspberry Pi 4 is optimal? - Neill - 06-30-2023 Is there any update on this thinking? Currently running a 3b+ with around 1.5tb of library and I'm finding it a bit laggy. Of course it could be that the ext hard drive is shutting down and needs to spin up before opening the library every time. So I'm guessing a pi4 won't help there. |
