Can't connect to wifi Raspberry Pi 3A+ - adam_zzz - 02-12-2023

Has anyone tested Moode recently with a Raspberry Pi 3A+?

I am able to access Moode just fine through ethernet cable or through it's wireless access point but after filling in my router's wifi SSID and Password in the UI, saving and restarting, the connection is not made, instead the Moode access point is started again.

In my router I have configured WPA2-PSK/WPA3-SAE mixed mode (CCMP).

Other things to note:
  • I see some attempts in my router's log from the Raspberry Pi MAC address saying "possible psk mismatch" so it seems it is not able to complete the handshake?
  • It's also not connecting when using Volumio and HiFiberryOS from the same device
  • However, another OS, Kerberos (kerberos.io) is able to connect just fine to wifi from the same device

Some info in this Raspberry Pi Linux issue
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/4718

One of the posters mentions adding some params to spa_supplicantl.conf
https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/4718#issuecomment-1214411359

ETA: Ran a quick test with a 3A+ and no issues with WiFi connecting to my Router running WPA2-PSK.

I have realized after a few hours of trying to put different things in wpa_supplicant.conf that probably they are not taken into effect... I have changed the SSID with a test string in the file but in the UI still the old one shows, the same in the log after rebooting when calling "moodeutl -l".

Is there anything I need to run in order for the wpa_supplicant.conf to be used?
What I did so far:
sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Ctrl +X , and Y
sudo reboot

Edit: When running "sudo wpa_cli" I get this message:
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/var/run/wpa_supplicant", O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_CLOEXEC|O_DIRECTORY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
pselect6(1, [], [], [], {tv_sec=0, tv_nsec=999998000}, NULL) = 0 (Timeout)

The Network Config page stores its entries in the cfg_network SQL table. This table is used to write wpa_supplicant.conf when SAVE is clicked.

Afterwords wpa_supplicant.conf can be manually edited with entries that are not also maintained in the SQL table, just don't subsequently SAVE from the Network Config page or it will overwrite  the file and the manual changes will be lost.

You've probably already notice this:

20230212 054715 worker: wlan0 no IP addr for SSID (HOMENETWORK)

that's the SSID the Pi has been trying to connect to for the past 90s, failing.

Is the SSID correct?
Can you triple-check that you correctly entered its password? (note: you cannot verify it in moOde's  configuration page, as it gets converted to a hash there... you might want to re-type it in ca-re-ful-ly,

There is something weird, though... even Volumio and HiFiberryOS cannot connect... and you have your router configured in miced-mode WPA2 / WPA3...
Can you quickly test with just plain WPA2? ...maybe the negotiation fails.

The SSID is correct, it's 2.4Ghz , I have also tried another one on 5GHz with no luck. I have typed, pasted, double checked that there are no empty spaces, etc.
I also tried to generate the psk from the command line and checked that it matches with the hash in wpa_supplicant.config

I changed my router to use only WPA2, restarted everything and I see no change.

I think Volumio and HiFiBerryOS are also using wpa_supplicant.config but I think the other OS that worked (Kerberos.IO) may be using a different mechanism because when I checked for the same file on Kerberos.IO, this file was almost empty, at least the SSID and Psk were missing... or maybe I was looking in the wrong place. In any case the setup was a bit different there, it doesn't have an access point, I just had to add a file wireless.conf containing the SSID and password in clear text to the SD card. Maybe it's based on a different distribution also, need to flash it again and try to figure out why it works there and not on Moode...

Did you try adding the lines below as described in this post ?https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/issues/4718#issuecomment-1214411359

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
.
.
update_config=1

network={
ssid="ssid"
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK-SHA256
psk=psk
ieee80211w=2
}

If this doesn't work then you should try posting an issue in the Raspberry Pi Forums.

I did, it didn't change anything Sad. Next week I'll try to set up wifi also on the Raspberry Pi OS and see how far I get, then I'll check also in the Raspberry Pi forums. I can also try a different router and a different Raspberry Pi model (3B+)
