Simple Automounting of USB SSDs - Skip Pack - 06-25-2023

This is possibly related to the thread just below, but I have had to follow a somewhat complicated path when bringing up a newly flashed SD image. Everything works as expected for my various setup tasks, virtually everything I change (system, audio, and mpd, plus now  CDSP with my new ProtoDAC) goes fine with required reboots. When I next go to check on the new library scan, my two 1TB Sandisk USB SSD units, plugged in from first boot, are not seen. A quick look via SSH and the 'df' command shows they are not mounted. The drives are formatted as ext4, and the behaviour is the same in the USB3 and USB2 slots In the RPi4B. If I take them out of the RPi, reboot, and then insert one of them, it is recognized via SSH and 'update library' works. I can then insert the second and the process works and I'm ready to go until I decide I need a new image, hours to months.

This works, and I avoid the false starts I hit earlier, but it seems to not to be the case from comments from other or my expectations from the writeups. This is not a critical issue, but I can't help but think I'm missing something. Your thoughts are most welcome!

The symptom suggests some sort of power issue, maybe not enough USB port power for 2 drives during boot.

Does it boot and successfully auto-mount when just 1 SSD is plugged in?

While I hate to retread the path, I'm happy to try that. I'll report later today or tomorrow.

Yes, booting with only 1 USB SSD worked with the SSD recognized as soon as I could SSH in. Adding the second SSD later after all the configuration was complete was recoginzed and the library updated without a problem. Some funny kink related to simultaneous demand, power or a service. I'm using a Allo Nirvana as the sole supply into the RPi. They are fairly beefy.

Then a powered hub might be the answer.

Your test results confirm that not enough power is available at boot to bring up 2 USB drives. As @DRONE7 mentioned a powered USB hub might be required.

The Nirvana is rated at 5V 2.85A so you might want to try an official Pi-4 power supply which is rated at 5.1V 3A.
