Bluetooth loud static - Blobby - 09-02-2023
(Initially posted in wrong section.. )
I have been trying to get audio from my Pixel 7a to Moode. I can connect and pair successfully, but when I try to play an audio file from the phone I just get ear-splittingly load static from the speakers. I have tried different settings within MPD, Audio and bluetooth settings to no avail. Does anybody have an idea what I need to do to get this to work, or what settings I should use?
Thanks in advance..

This is not a problem I’ve observed with my Pixel 6a and moOde.
First, you need to provide us more info. Let’s begin with the startup log which can be downloaded from the Logs section of System Config or printed via the moodeutl -l command or you can copy it from the end of System info. For readability you should post the result into a code block in your reply.

What kind of file are you trying to play?
Bluetooth doesn't use MPD for local playback, it uses its own renderer.
RE: Bluetooth loud static - TheOldPresbyope - 09-02-2023
@Blobby
At a glance, I don't see anything suspicious about your log output but perhaps someone else will spot something.
I know nothing about the Allo Piano 2.1 DAC.
In a test just now with a Khadas Tone1 USB DAC hanging off a Pi4B running moOde 8.3.5, I'm listening to a track in the Spotify app on my Pixel 6A whose Bluetooth output is driving moOde's Bluetooth input. No loud static. Same while listening to SOMA FM stations in the RadioDroid app or tracks in Amazon Music in the eponymous app on my phone.
For the techies, while a track is playing I get this report from moodeutl
Code: pi@m835-64:~ $ moodeutl --hwparams
access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED
format: S32_LE
subformat: STD
channels: 2
rate: 48000 (48000/1)
period_size: 4800
buffer_size: 24000
S32_LE because that's what the Tone1 accepts and 48000 bps because that's what Bluetooth is sending and the Tone1 accepts that too.
As an aside, Android (Developer options) reports Bluetooth is streaming to moOde using the aptX codec (yay!) at 48kHz and 24 bits/sample.

Kent
PS - in the spirit of Paul Hogan, G-day Mate! I've spent time in 4 Australian states but I haven't made it to Western Australia yet.

I have tried mp3 and ogg files - same result.
I have had this working correctly using moode 7.3. (not with pixel though).

Loaded a card with 7.3 and updated to about 7.6ish (next update requires a reflash).
All setup and now bluetooth plays properly.
I did notice that the previous 8.3.5 was a 64bit version whereas the new card I setup is 32bit..
Could this be a reason for my original problems?
RE: Bluetooth loud static - TheOldPresbyope - 09-03-2023
@Blobby
I neglected to say I was running the 64-bit moOde 8.3.5 in the test I reported previously. The only time I run the 32-bit legacy version is when I'm testing on an older Pi such as the Pi Zero W which don't support the 64-bit instruction set.
It's really difficult to diagnose a situation like this where we can't repro the problem on our own devices.
One thought is for you to do the same as I did, reporting the following for when you are successfully streaming to moOde 7.6 and when you are unsuccessfully streaming to moOde 8.3.5.
1) what the Pixel says about its Bluetooth connection
To get this information you need to enable the Developer Options in Android. See, for example, How to enable ... for a user-friendly description of this process.
Then, while the Pixel is connected via Bluetooth to moOde and is streaming some audio out, go to Settings > System > Developer options and scroll well down to the Bluetooth audio info.
2) what moOde says about the ALSA feed to the DAC
To get this information I used sudo moodeutl --hwparams
Another thought...you're not also using a Allo Kali reclocker by any chance? ISTR there's a problem with 24-bit depth PCM and the Kali, but I'm not the guy to diagnose that. Try searching this forum.

Kent
RE: Bluetooth loud static - Blobby - 10-12-2023
Sorry for not replying earlier, changing jobs has taken my attention for a few weeks...
Since I set it up as mentioned in my last post it has been working perfectly, so I see no reason for me to upgrade it past 7.6.
Unless there is a good reason to, I am happy to leave it as is.
Thanks to all for the advice.
