SAMBA or NFS share on NAS? - wadada - 11-27-2023

Hi,
my music is on a Synology NAS. It provides NFS & SAMBA. I tried both and could not find any differences by looking at the system monitor (htop). But did not do deep dive comparison. Is one more stable, quicker in scanning huge databases, ...?
Thanks.

IMO unless you have a specific need to use Samba on your Pi's, and since your NAS supports NFS go with NFS. It's fast, reliable, secure and native on Linux.

This is just a personal opinion, but if you have other, non-Linux computers on the LAN which might need access to your music library, I'd suggest using SAMBA shares. It's been reliable for me and fast enough for what we do.

Either choice is fine with moOde, though, so it comes down to choosing the protocol you're more comfortable setting up and administering on your LAN. Happily, whether a proprietary NAS such as Synology or an open-source one such as OpenMediaVault, or even a bare-bones Linux box, you can run either or both.

Regards,
Kent

I did an Music Source scan with a quite huge database. Turned out that the SAMBA share was scanned much faster than the NFS share. I will test it further with SAMBA on one moode player and with NFS on another moode player.

I use Samba; coz we’ve got RPi & Windoze 10/11 machines on the network

What’s the problem with Windows and NFS ..
I’ve used Moode for years on RPI and have my music on Synology.
Music collection on Synology is maintained from Windows PC and all
is connected via LAN.
I have all years used NFS for RPI without problems and Synology is
mounted as networkdrive in Windows. Transferring files from Windows
is super fast and no problems with Pi and NAS.

I think it is necessary to mount as drive in Windows to get fast transfer
to NAS.
