Hello there.....
In another thread....Al (Nutul).... alerted me to the idea of updating Moodeaudio data drives directly from the network
(as opposed to physically moving drives from PC to RPi)
Am given to understand that SMB (Samba) is the way to achieve this???
Am I barking up the wrong tree here??
Samba instructions ( in guide) say :
FILE SHARING
- SMB File Sharing can be turned on in System Config. SMB (Samba) shares named
NAS, Playlists, and SDCard are automatically created. Each USB disk will also
have a Samba share created that is named after its Disk Label.
- NFS File Sharing can be turned on in System Config. Access and options defaults
are provided but can be manually overridden. Each USB disk will have an NFS
export created whose path is /media/disk_label.
Have switched these ON....including NFS
Nothing appears in MY Computer (or Network) on PC ..... there must be more to setup here???
Is there an idiot guide please????

Microsoft Windows I suppose. It's a PITA these days.
I have an old copy of Window 10 Pro set up as a guest operating system in VirtualBox on my Linux laptop.
Since Microsoft has SMB1.0 protocol support turned off by default, none of my Linux-based SMB servers show up in the File Browser.
However, if I right-click on "This PC" or "Network" in the File Browser and select "map network drive" I can map one or more SMB shares to Windows drives.
For example, the SDCARD share on a moOde player imaginatively named "moode"
\\moode\SDCARD is mapped to drive Z:
and the MUSIC share on an OpenMediaVault server named "omv-hc1"
\\omv-hc1\MUSIC is mapped to drive Y:

Hi,
I warned you ONLY because large collections may take considerable time to update over network shares, as there is metadata, as well as (embedded) images extraction.
The sharing options you describe are what moOde can share over the network for other players to see; what you want, OTOH, is point moOde to a network share on a NAS or a computer in your network, and that can be achieved by "m" => Configure => Library, then pressing the button [create] Music source.
From there you can also scan the network for shares detection.

Great.....can now see the Samba shared drive in My Pc
Attempting to copy files however....I get the "media is write protected" error.
Not allowed to change the properties of the Samba Z-drive from My PC.....
So....I'm hoping there's another way forward??....in m>System>File Sharing/options perhaps???

What exactly is it that you want to achieve here? Where is your music stored? Where do you want to have it stored? There are several options for where to put your music and several other options for making it visible in other locations once it is there so let's begin with your requirement so we can help you achieve that.
Your journey this far looks like it might have resulted in you going round in a circle if I've followed it correctly.

Thanks Al.....but confusion still rife for me!
I've done "m" => Configure => Library, then pressing the button [create] Music source.
....and created 3 Music sources ....those being my drives that are local to the Pi.
All 3 can be seen in My PC.....but can't be written to.

Aiming for files to be held on drives that are local to the RPi
That way....I can play audio....with the PC switched OFF.....as it is a source of audible noise.
Hoping to transfer files from PC to RPi drives using the network.

I was assuming you wanted to transfer files to your moOde player.
The first time the Windows File Explorer tries to mount one of your moOde Samba (SMB) shares it asks for login credentials. I'm not at my Win10 system at the moment and I can't recall the exact nature of this ask but you want to mount the share as "guest" with no password (I either just select connect or enter guest and select connect, I don't recall which.). Now you should be able to edit the contents of the share from Windows [1].
An alternative to all this is to work from the Windows command line and use the "net" command to mount network shares.
NOTE - File Explorer remembers past connections. Once you enter credentials, even wrong ones, it's damn hard to make Windows forget them and start fresh. You'll see all past connections in the Folder pulldown menu in "map network drive...." There's plenty of posts about this to be found on the Internet.

It made sense to go with pi/moodeaudio.....and it appears to have worked....but too late for the Guest option.
There aren't any others on my LAN (as far as I know!)....just little ole me.
