Thumbnail generator hangs 9.0.2 - ajaykay - 06-17-2024

Fresh install, music both MP3 and FLAC on the SD card.
I 'Update library' all the music appears, but I'm trying to fix a thumbnail/arwork display issue.
I've tweaked some MP3 files, uploaded them, but whenever the thumbnail generator hits the attached file path it stops and won't go further.
The path it gets stuck on is not one of the ones I have altered btw, this happened before I edited any files too.

I've reflashed and tried again, same thing.
There are no other files in this path other than MP3s.

I have zipped the first file in that folder and can share it.

Here are the logs, I can't see them getting stuck in that folder path though.

The error message is clear enough, IMO:

20240617 091121 thumb-gen: Error: File does not contain ID3v2 tag of supported version: v2.2: SDCARD/Ace Hood & Swizz Beatz/#MonsterMondays/HUSLTE HARD (Dirty).mp3

It either has a version that is too old, or the newer (2.4) which might not be supported (yet...)
Anyway, as Tim said, post us the files and we'll have a better look.

So I've just tried deleting those specific files from the SD card and re-running regen thumbnails. Same thing happens, it stalls.

Will email over the first mp3 in the stalling location.

The file you sent over for testing contains 2 (two) id3v2 tags, the first of which is v1.1 (that is why the message...)
Probably there are other files with the same problem.
Use a program like kid3 (or similar) to correct the tags and everything will be ok.

ETA
Also, the id3v2.3 tag in it has the COMMENT field giving "Has excess white space" error, according to kid3; so there might be also other things to fix.
I suspect your files were downloaded and tagged by iTunes... am I right?

I'm not able to repro the issue. The test file is stored on an attached USB drive.

Careful there on the error message interpretation. The file I received (01 Into the Black.mp3) is not one of the files which generated the message in question.

For the file I received, the APIC frame (which contains the image) in the ID3v2.3 tag is labeled "OTHER" instead of "FRONT_COVER". The image itself contains EXIF data from Canon and Photoshop so not what I would expect from a commercial music source.

As mentioned ,the file has an extraneous ID3v1 tag tacked on the end.

Putting aside the sloppiness of the tagging, this file did not cause moOde's thumbnail generator to "stall". As proof, I get a proper thumbnail which shows up in the Playback view when I add the track to the queue.

About half of my music is iTunes from years ago, yes.

Ditched the V1 tags on most (if not all of my library) regen now works. Thanks!

Just so you know. the ID3v1 tag is tacked onto the end of the MP3 file.

ID3v2.x tags are placed at the beginning of the file before the MP3 data. Entirely different kettle of fish.

That message "Error: File does not contain ID3v2 tag of supported version: v2.2" is the thumbnail generator complaining that the tag in question is an ID3v2.2 tag rather that the much more common ID3v2.3 tag.

I just found out that ID3v2.2 was the version written by iTunes 5.0, so I'm not surprised to hear where your files came from.

I wish we had a program available that would weed out all questionably tagged tracks, regardless of format, so we didn't have to keep going through these exercises all the time. Spoiler alert: it's hard work to write and maintain such a program that produces neither false positives nor false negatives on rando collections.
