Remote NAS creation problem* - 5-pot-fan - 01-24-2025

I have 2 x Rpis running Moode but cannot create a Remote NAS on either.

Sorry for the lengthy post but details of my setup may be relevant.

Setup - 2 x Rpis plus a Wiim Ultra (network streamer/preamp)

A) Rpi5 with Moode 9.3.2 on wired network with static IP. 1 x external usb drive attached. Local library is updated, and access and local output to Dac + amp are fine.

B) Rpi4 with Moode 9.3.2 on the same wired network, also with a static IP address. This unit has a docking station attached, with an old hard drive in it. This also works OK, the library is updated and local output to it's  own Dac and amp is OK.

Both Rpis have Samba and DLNA enabled

.Also so on the network is a Wiim Ultra, purchased to act as a multi-input streamer and preamp, with sub management.

The Ultra can see and play all files from both Rpis across the network, using DLNA.

Because the Ultra is nowhere near as good as Moode for library control I want to use the Rpi5 as my  control for network-attached music files, using the Ultra mainly  as a preamp.

For various reasons the main files are on the Rpi4, and I would like to keep this arrangement, not moving the usb drive to the Rpi5, or duplicating the files in both locations.

Problem:
Neither Rpi/Moode unit can be persuaded to create a Remote NAS.

On scanning the network each will put a list of potential sources in the drop down box, and I can select the path/share that I want. (This is the same as I see from my Windows laptop, for confirmation.)

I have tried entering the local username, (and also tried "guest / blank "), and applied a name for this drive eg' Rpi4 drive'.

On pressing Save I get a wheel symbol by the menu- the same wheel I see when updating the library. This can go on for many minutes, and in 9 times out of 10 nothing positive results. if it does, however, the created Remote Nas disappears soon afterwards, even without a reboot.

It is possible that when reading the Rpi4 drive from the Rpi5 the username and password are incorrect. However the little usb drive on the Rpi5 is unlikely to require a username etc, as it has only just been setup on the Rpi5. I understand that the most it can require is 'guest/blank' for access.

Can anyone suggest what may be wrong ?

If  no 'idiot!' answer is obvious I could send an error log if requested.
Thanks in advance.

You should split this into paragraphs otherwise its not going to get read, at least by me.

@5-pot-fan

Let's cut through the chaff.

As I read your post, you have two moOde players. Supposedly, each player is publishing an SMB share to your LAN, where the share is a file system on a USB drive. Neither player is able to mount the SMB share of the other as a remote NAS.source.

The short answer is, since you're able to play tracks from the USB drives on their respective local players, this should be working just fine. As I type this I'm looking at exactly such an arrangement on my desk with "playerB" mounting the SMB share from "playerA" and v.v.

Let's look at the sharing from playerA to playerB:

On playerA,  I've enabled SMB file sharing (on the System screen) with no password entered.

On playerB, I've defined a new Remote host (on the Remote NAS Source screen, reached from the Config/Music Library screen), selecting type SMB, scanning to find and select the path of the share I want, entering the Userid 'guest', not entering any Password, and giving it a name. Saved it.

Back to the Music Library screen on playerB. The source is shown with a green check mark to indicate it's been successfully mounted. (If shown with a red X, there's a problem. Click on it to go back to the Remote NAS Source screen and click again where indicated to get the mount error message you can report).

Now all I have to do is update playerB's library.

Done.

You'll have to start giving more details about the specific settings you chose if you want more help. To set the stage, a good first step would be to give us the startup system log for each step. First, reboot the system to get a clean log. The log can be viewed via the SSH command moodeutl -l or downloaded via the Logs section in System Config, or via Menu, System info from any of the Config screens. Cut and paste the result into a code block in your post.

Kent

Thank you for your response.
It looks like I'm doing the right things, but I now have some doubts about the touchscreen tablet I'm using while my laptop is awaiting repair. I will find another computer with a mouse before re-testing the procedures, and replying with a log if still needed.

This symptom suggests some sort of major breakage :-0

"On pressing Save I get a wheel symbol by the menu- the same wheel I see when updating the library. This can go on for many minutes, and in 9 times out of 10 nothing positive results. if it does, however, the created Remote Nas disappears soon afterwards, even without a reboot."

Couple things:

1. On the Pi5 > Remote NAS Source screen, post the full string that is in the Path field
2. Reboot and then post the contents of the startup log.

The log can be viewed via the SSH command moodeutl -l or downloaded via the Logs section in System Config, or via Menu, System info from  any of the Config screens. The startup log will be at the end of System info output.

RE: Remote NAS creation problem* - 5-pot-fan - 01-26-2025

OK - now using an old W7 PC,.

I can create a remote NAS on Rpi4, looking at Rpi5's usb folders. Remote NAS entry is ticked and green, abd the library updates.

On the Rpi5 things are not so good.
First, there is a difference with screen behaviour (compared with the Rpi4) on clicking the 'Scan' button when starting to create a remote NAS. The screen changes to show ' Reconnect' + 'checking connection' before redisplaying the remote nas screen.
The expected options appear in the list, though, when the screen comes back to normal.
On selecting the appropriate remote source/name, entering 'guest' and blank passord, and entering a name for the connected source and it fails, with a red cross (as described).
I have tried with 3 possible username/password combinations, all with the same result. However in Config/System on the Rpi4 the Samba share is set with password = None.

The mount error is:`

20250126 121625 worker: Try (mount -t cifs "//RPI4/WDGreen" -o username="guest",password="",rsize=61440,wsize=65536,iocharset=utf8,ro,noserverino,cache=none,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 "/mnt/NAS/RPi4-drive")
20250126 121625 worker: Err (mount error: could not resolve address for RPI4: Unknown error)

I hope this is an acceptable way of displaying the error message (if not how do I insert a code block?), and that someone can read the tea leaves.

Thanks

That suggests a network issue.

Post the startup log

RE: Remote NAS creation problem* - TheOldPresbyope - 01-26-2025

@5-pot-fan

When you are editing a post, you'll see a line of icons starting with a bold "B" on the left. Hover your cursor over each icon to see what their function is. If you hover over the third icon from the right (in full screen) you'll see "CODE" pop up. Click on this icon to open a code block in your post. Paste your code in it. Click outside the code block to continue regular text.

As Tim and I have both asked, please post the startup log (for each host).

Jumping ahead a bit, the error message says your RPi5 cannot resolve the DNS hostname RPI4 (note: case doesn't matter in hostnames). As Tim said, that's a network issue. I can think of a reason this might be so If this happened in both directions, but you say your RPI4 can mount the share from your RPI5, so we need more info.

Again, as Tim asked, what is the full string which appears in the path field---again, be sure to tell us for both hosts.

Regards,
Kent

RE: Remote NAS creation problem* - 5-pot-fan - 01-27-2025

Regards,
Kent
