I think I've found a scenario where setting the screen blank time to values below 5 minutes also affects the screen brightness. My setup is using the official 7" Pi display. If I set the blank time to 10 seconds, the screen backlight is more or less off. If I then change the value of the brightness (by setting it to 254 - it doesn't seem to recognise the change if I set to 255), then the backlight is back on again. Using the mk1 human eye, I reckon setting the blank time to 2 minutes makes the display about half as bright as it is normally, which would make sense.
Unless, I've completely misunderstood how this is meant to work - in which case, forgive me!
