[SOLVED] USB SSD not available in folder view with RPi Zero W

The same Sabrent/Goldenfir combo worked the first time with a RPi Zero 2W.

Odd behavior now with the Zero W. No response plugging in the USB drive, but library update wheel spinning when the drive is unplugged. The USB drive (04E3-8958, which is empty) now appears without a USB drive attached.

I will try it on the Zero.

I will mark this as Solved. Hardware compatibility problem with the Sabrent USB SSD adapter and the Zero W.

On the Zero, I am able to see the USB drive. I initially forgot devmon, but then right after it was added in configuration it seemed to scan the drive. I can see the drive and contents in folder view, but get permission errors from MPD when trying to play the file:

The USB drive continued to appear in the Folder view with F681-5B24 identification even after the drive was removed. The mpd log showed the last actions were removal. Now it's back and listed in the mpd log as:

The drive will still appear in Folder view even after removing it because Folder view is referencing the MPD database and not the underlying file system. What would prolly break is cover art display.

Check the /media directory for ghost mount entries (they begin with one or more underscores). If there are any post output from ls -l /media

I moved the powered USB hub (minus the Wifi dongle) with USB SSD drive back over to the Zero W, and now after a couple of library updates , it is connected and playing files from the SSD.

Don't mean to bump this post to the top. Just an update. I tried this cheap USB adapter. This adapter works with the Zero W and devmon. Identified as "Other World Computing SATA External USB adapter PA023U3". Update: It does work with Zero 2W, but requires a powered USB hub.

I don't recall if I asked this before but are you seeing same compatibility issues with Pi > Zero? 

Pi-3 and higher would be using disks-glue auto-mounter and would have different USB chipset.
You might want to try a Pi-3A+ and see how it compares to the Zero's with regard to USB, noise etc.

ETA: Another consideration for moving to Pi-3 or higher is that we are prolly only going to do 64-bit Bookworm releases going forward.
