Tidal Master on MoOde Audio
#1
Good morning,
Using BubbleUPnP presently which appears to not support Tidal Masters.  Looking at mconnect Player https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...paid&hl=en it does appear to support sending Tidal Masters.  I can see comments on the forum from people that use mconnect player for Tidal & Qubuz, but does it handle Hi Res please in MoOde?

Well it claims it does, but there's still the question of decoding the MQA stream delivered by Tidal Masters. Do you have an MQA-aware DAC? AFAIK there is no MQA decoder available in software for MPD.

I have no experience with MQA but here's a nice description of various scenarios https://www.audiostream.com/content/mqa-...-explained

MQA from Tidal is available only on Tidal own desktop application/player on computers

You might want to read this before worrying too much about MQA.

MQA is nothing more than ugly DRM masquerading as some sort of "improvement". It will never appear in moOde.

MQA is just proprietary DRM. It's not some sort of awesome new audio format.

Rustydoglim, (Jason Lim), who is behind a company that (IMO) produces "no BS" audiophile products, said this:
Quote:We don't want to get into the MQA debate so please take my comment as purely from engineering standpoint.
What we learned during the implementation of MQA is that a newer XMOS USB communication chip does the so called MQA unfolding (lets just call it decoding).  I have done all sorts of programming in my early career from CPU level assembly code, firmware, C++, Java and client scripts.  So, is there any difference between doing the decoding by the player on the computer versus on the USB chip ? I don't think so.

I will like you to compare decoding MQA from the computer versus decoding on Evo DAC whether you can hear any difference.  My point is that if you like the sound characteristic of MQA, go ahead and subscribe to this compression streaming service. But I doubt MQA DAC is necessary.
The creator of MQA, Bob, said this
Quote:Full software decode is not possible because the DAC must be known and characterized
So the conclusion - just a DRM wrapper. Because MQA is patented, commercial, and proprietary, MQA playback for any opensource players are highly unlikely. The PI no doubt have the horsepower to do the job... but commercial restrictions Smile

With MQA you get the full sized file, but cant play the full quality unless you buy equipment that supports full MQA decoding
(controlled by Bob).

The master recording could be wrapped into another format, without the same restrictions.

FLAC can accomplish the same results - free…
just my 2cents - sorry for the rant -

Why is that? Using Tidal is very inconvenient now trough UPNP and lack of Tidal support is major disadvantage of moode which is overall a good application.
In summary will not hesitate to exchange moode to another tool while it offer full tidal support... (for now I exclude Roon as too expensive, but still considering it if there is no other option) I try hardly to use Tinal trough UPNP but this is nightmare!
I am not the only one, I am sure...

Yes its inconvenient. Maybe a dev will volunteer to write a Tidal or other Music Service integration into moOde. I'd be happy to work with them :-)

The MQA codec is proprietary with a restrictive license and thus cannot be included in moOde which is licensed under Open Source GPL.

The wonderful thing about FOSS is that you are free to use or reject all the possibilities but the reverse of the coin is that FOSS developers are free to set their own agenda.

Good luck in your search.
