From the current description in the preferences:
1. Timed display: on all connected clients the cover view is shown after the specified time, when MPD is not playing and no renderers are active.
2. Automatic display: shows the cover view on the locally attached display; connected clients are not affected.
You probably want either (1) to activated during playback (note, this was done probably to activate the click display when the player is inactive), or (2) to affect all connected clients...
@Tim Curtis I would probably go for Automatic display => No / Yes / All, with All affecting also the connected clients, what do you think?
