Beat the Heat ! (I spent under $4 US )
Cheap and simple 1) a 90' header for HAT to leave the Pi open for cooling... https://www.ebay.com/itm/2PCS-2-54mm-Dou...SwxKtYBM9r 2) a fan.... plenty of USB fans for pennies... mine was from a yard sale...new in a box for .50c https://www.amazon.com/iKross-Mini-Deskt...4TK1Z1F83A 3) a way to make it silent... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-Micro-USB-...3614116176 With the controller wound almost down the fan gives an inaudible gentle breeze across the Pi4 and monitoring temps it has dropped from idling at 56' without the fan to playing at 35' for several hours with the fan. Now that it works I will put it all in a box and dispense with the cage/mount around the fan. https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-find...e-command/ I am powering the fan with a 5v wallwart and not via the Pi...;-)

I’ve been looking at the Brennan B2, which I think is based on this blog entry by Steve Brennan.
http://www.questions4steveb.co.uk/html/R...D-auto-Rip abcde and halevt to wake it up and rip CDs. Matsushita make a nice slot-loader that runs on 5v and has a USB interface (but I can’t find my spec sheet with the model number) which you can power separately from the USB. I’ve now got half a dozen SSD’s, so when I finally hit the ground in NZ (maybe some months) with a suitcase full of Pi 4s and IQ Audio kit ( 12 miles away from me, right now), and a bunch of lasers, CNC’s and 3D printers I’ll be having a go. As abcde is effectively just a script, I hope it will work with default Moode. Halevt will need installing, though. And hi Tim, long time

There's been a conversation ongoing mostly outside the Forum about CD playback and CD ripping as a part of moOde. I'm away from home right now but can catch you up later. A developer not actively participating in the Forum sent Tim some code and I got involved trialing it. Yes, abcde is compatible with moOdeOS and auto-playback has even been fitted experimentally into the moOde UI but seamlessly integrating everything with the moOde backend and UI is challenging. Hey Kent, yes I’ve still been actively using it, but moving back to Borneo kills the creative side as the expense and time of shipping (2 months or more, form China!) and the frequency of missing shipments stifled my creativity somewhat. We’ve moved, slowly making my way back to NZ via Europe and so with better pricing, better and more reliable shipping (and a market - found it hard to convince Asians to buy anything home-made) comes increased impetus to do more stuff. I’ve acquired quite a bit of high-tech gear, too, which means panels, housings, etc. I can make myself.

Mike, I have this mental image of you as a modern-day tinker, schlepping a cart full of what-not from town to town. I think an Ian McShane or perhaps a young, roguish Rutger Hauer should play the part in the movie adaptation. (Speaking of whom, I hate it when I read that someone my age has died.)
When you get back to NZ we can talk about autoripping. The abcde script is more than 5000 lines of bash code. <tl;dr> It rips fine for me but as always metadata and coverart are a bit hit-or-miss, or at least they are for my classical CDs. Don't know halevt. The latest version I see is 0.1.6.2 from 2010 and it's no longer in Debian/Raspbian distros. We used a udev rule to detect when a CD is inserted into the drive. Regards, Kent

One challenge is that when metadata is not correct after auto-ripping or when playing a CD then there is no way to correct it.
Thats a big gap to fill...

Seen the doco about the bloke schlepping the fridge around Ireland on his back? |
