Yeah, the API works but for most users doing things the moOde way™ would simply use the webUI

As in "m > Update library"

Glad you got things sorted. Now enjoy all those albums (I always like seeing what other folks have in their collection and thanks to you have now listened to, e.g., 65daysofstatic for the first time).

I had to do one last change to make the web UI usable for me. I had to disable following symlinks in mpd.conf as I didn't see an option in the web configurator:

follow_inside_symlinks "no"

This avoids duplicates because of my heavily symlinked, manually organized the old-school way classical music collection.
