motor encoder controlled volume pot

I'd like advice on the practicalities of building a method for the moode volume GUI to control the physical volume pot on an analogue amp with a motor encoder as I don't wish to use any software volume management.

Is anyone aware of any projects or elements that could be used?

Geek alert - you're entering the wonderful world of CNC (in which I dabbled for roughly a decade, contributing to the LinuxCNC and MachineKit projects). Have fun. Just keep in mind that 90+ percent of the project will have nothing to do with moOde per se.

It's just got RCA inputs on the back, very basic, volume control on the left, input selector on the right.

 I have a DAC connected to RCA in, it also has no volume control.

yikes, and thanks, I have access to a CNC from a local "Men's shed" here. I had no idea but your wording implies I'm about to enter the first sphere of hell.

So, did you "win"? Are you using Moode and controlling an analogue volume set-up?

Naw, I gave up my CNC gear long ago: 2-axis lathe, 3-axis mill, 3D printing, plus experimental stuff. For quite awhile I also mentored high school robotics teams but typically their ‘bots were closer to RC-systems than to CNC. 

I’m quite satisfied with volume control in software or my DAC.

There is no way for moOde to send volume control commands to a volume pot on a remote device.

Your best bet is to use either MPD Software volume (32 bit) or CamillaDSP software volume (64 bit) combined with calibrating your system for volume using the steps below. This ensures that at typical listening levels the amount of software volume attenuation (in dB) will so small that distortion (if any) thats created will be completely inaudible.

1. Turn Amp volume down to 0 (no sound output)
2. Set moOde volume to 100 (full 0dB level)
3. Play a track that represents the type of music you listen to often
4. Gradually raise the Amp volume to a point where the sound is as loud as you would ever listen at
5. Reduce moOde volume to typical listening level

If you use CamillaDSP software volume the attenuation in dB can be displayed in the moOde volume knob by turning on the "Display dB volume" setting in the MPD section of Audio Config.
