If you make use of the "comment" tag to apply your categories, then use the search function to limit to the value you have put in the comment tag, that should achieve what you want.

Update: It works quite nicely. I made three categories: primary, secondary, tertiary. Primary is the largest category and contains all the music that I listen to regularly or might want to listen to (jazz, blues, classical). Secondary is about half the size and contains rock and country stuff that I probably won't be listening to much if at all. Tertiary has only a couple dozen albums that are sort of specialty items or things I somehow found their way into my collection and I may never listen to.

The search works great, even the simple search field. The only thing I know of that I'd change is the ability to find two categories at once. If I enter two terms (primary, secondary) it returns nothing. I don't suppose there are any operators that would make it an OR search? Even so, this gives me the ability to focus on just the part of my collection that I'm really interested in.
