How to get rid of audio glitchs
#1
I have a Pi3B+ with a Hifiberry Digi card running Moode and outputting to an external DAC via SPDIF over coax.
I am using BubbleUpnp with a music server.
With my previous DAC this worked perfectly.
I have a new improved DAC but it clicks/glitches when I start playback.
I realise that this is an issue with the DAC and it's handling of the digital signal but I like the sound of it!
My question is: Does Moode have a setting that I can't find that keeps the digital signal alive when there is no track being played so that it doesn't generate a DC switching noise on track start?
Alternatively is there something like this in Camilla?
Note that it doesn't happen between tracks with gapless playback.

Keeping the audio output open would need to be done upstream by the player software i.e., MPD or the renderers for example AirPlay or Spotify Connect. The Squeezelite renderer already does this by default.

Here's an older MPD issue that was posted requesting such a feature. The MPD maintainer pointed the OP to the existing "always_on" option and then closed the issue. The problem is that that option only works with the HTTP server feature in MPD and not with the ALSA output.
https://github.com/MusicPlayerDaemon/MPD/issues/1599

Hopefully someone will post another issue requesting the feature, or better yet a PR with the code to implement it.

Thanks Tim. I had a look at the MPD thread and it looks to be a similar issue. I'll also try BubbleUpnp to see if they have a solution.

What make/model is the DAC?

I previously had one of these and it didn't have the same issue:

I see you are a NOS fan :-)

The Soekris DAC prolly has some sort of code in its FPGA firmware to minimize or suppress the glitches caused when the incoming audio data stops and starts.

Not sure about the Sparkler DAC but you may want to mention the issue to the manufacturer and see what they say. Maybe they can provide a patch or workaround.
