Problem With New SMSL Sanskrit 10th II
#1
Hi All,

I'm trying to use a SMSL Sanskrit 10th MKii and getting a D-8 error. I have even started with a fresh install and have set the MPD output device to SMSL USB AUDIO. Upon boot, it briefly flashes 768 and then I get the error. Here is output of modeutil -l:

D-8 error / briefly flashes 768  I'm assuming relate to the DAC as I've not seen anywhere in MoOde that this will appear.

Looking at the log...
20210804 204114 worker: ALSA SMSL USB AUDIO volume set to (0%)

Volume is set to 0

20210804 204805 worker: MPD volume control (software)

20210804 204805 worker: Hdwr volume controller exists

You are using software volume control.
In the audio tab there is an option for Hardware control.

(I've put the output you posted in code tags...in the posting editor it is the 5th icon from the right on second line)

users @philrandal  and @jonners  both have that DAC so may be along to help..

yes, the 768/D-8 message was on the DAC screen. Changed volume control to hw, but message is the same.. Here is the output now, d-8 message is still showing on DAC after full reboot of DAC and Pi:

A quick search doesn't bring up any explanation of what the error codes refer to -- do you have any idea or is there something in the Sanskrit documentation ?
768 would appear to reference the pcm rate the DAC expects but that's odd...what settings does the dac have for input bitrates etc.

Do check the basics too... try another USB port, and another USB cable. On a Pi4 use the USB2 ports.

Play an audio file, adjust the volume in the player window and then from the menu select audio info and post the output.

Thanks for the suggestions, and I agree that 768 is a rate that the DAC thinks it’s delivering, but it just displays that for a split second..I did try every USB port, results were the same (it’s a pi4b BTW). I’ll play an audio file and collect the requested info ASAP and post back.

Any ideas on why the output says volume is set to 0 even after setting volume control to hw? Thanks again..

I too had trouble getting this DAC to be initially recognised by Moode. Make sure you have the USB input selected ('In 1').
If you have an extra 5V PSU try connecting it to the upper 5V input of the DAC to get it turned on before you boot up the RPi.

Edit: Also note that -00 on the DAC indicates max volume, -40 is minimum. I use hardware volume setting in Moode.
If all else fails, try using a different USB cable.

D-8 seems to be be the normal state after rebooting my Pi 4.

I use Moode 7.3, hardware volume, sox resampling to 384 k, Hz, I think.

Can't check the moment as I am in hospital recovering from an aortic valve replacement.

There was some fun where moode could forget the usb dac it was attached to, but this was fixed in 7.2 or 7.3.

Cheers,

Phil

Mine does not display D-8, it shows the sequence described in the manual.

Hope you have a good and speedy recovery Phil.

Thank you.

I've probably got it wrong, but I do see D-8, maybe after I have switched sources.

Some people say that D-8 is DSD 512 K

Whoa, back on up a bit buddy, "Can't check the moment as I am in hospital recovering from an aortic valve replacement." Whaaaaat???

I had two MI's and an acute coronary episode, I've got 7 stents but hey, aortic valve replacement? DUDE!

Seriously Phil, take care of yourself mate and get yourself better.
