Right, the gateway issue appeared to be regional and so its effects varied depending on where you were located.
Although Spotify and Apple protocols are proprietary both companies have graciously tolerated the two fantastic Open Source projects i.e., librespot and shairport-sync, that successfully reverse engineered them. Hopefully this won't change.

"Graciously"... well I'm so gracious paying for Spotify every month. The moment they stop librespot I quit my payment.
