Unusual behavior with generic touchscreen?
#1
Hello all!

I am very new to the project but am really enjoying it so far. I got a generic 7.5in touchscreen from Temu (wynk is the brand I believe) and when I plugged the HDMI into my Pi3b+ running MoOde it only showed the terminal. I played with a few settings but could never get the UI (chromium in kiosk) to appear. I dug through some forum threads and the fixes I found there didn't work.

After trying to troubleshoot the errors it seemed like a display server wasn't installed by default so I installed lightdm and now things are working as expected.

Was this the correct thing to do? Was there something I missed? I like keeping as few packages on the box as possible so if lightdm wasn't needed, I'd be curious to learn what I did wrong or should have tried.

Since you don’t specify what you did, it’s hard to know what’s not working. On a vanilla moOde install, you should need only enable the local display (m > Peripherals). No additional packages are needed in 9.1.4 and certainly not a display manager.

Try latest 9.1.5 and as @TheOldPresbyope mentioned, all that should be needed is to turn on the Local display in Peripheral Config.

I did an inplace upgrade and then on a separate sd card did a fresh install.

On the latest version of moOde 9.1.5 2024-11-26 toggling the displace worked as expected. So there must have been something off in the last build?

If I did a backup of my previous one (had lots of radio stations I added) would it work with the latest build?

I did a fresh install on the latest and it did work as expected so maybe something was off in the previous build? Either way, very happy and appreciate the reply! Now to get a 3D printed case for the screen and pi so it looks nice in my audio setup Smile

Actually @TheOldPresbyope and @Tim Curtis I may have spoke too soon. So my pi goes to my receiver with an aux cord so under the setup options, I have to change the integrated audio setting to firmware mode. When I do this, and then go to the peripherals option and toggle the display, it does not active the touch screen like it did when the integrated audio mode was kernel. I just noticed that there is a note when using this setting that the firmware is headphone only so that explains my initial issue. I guess the only way to get the display to work and use the headphone jack is to install lightdm and launch the gui that way? Guess it's a work around but I don't have DAC so I can't do audio out and HDMI and the same time currently so I'm stuck with the headphone jack.

Your best bet to avoid the pain and get to the goal of just listening to some good music is to get a DAC board with Headphone out for example the inexpensive Raspberry Pi DAC+ https://www.raspberrypi.com/products/dac-plus/

Also available are inexpensive HDMI audio extractors. Check online dealers such as Amazon, B&H, Sweetwater, Crutchfield, BestBuy, and the like.
