Solved: Loud pop/click when skipping tracks
#1
First of all, thanks to the moOde community. I've been a silent but happy user for many years.

I just upgraded my old rPi to a 4B model, with a fresh install of v9.2.0. My DAC is a Audioquest Dragonfly (Black model). I have left almost all settings to default values, apart from selecting the DAC and adding a SMB source. I can provide full system info if needed.

When playing music, all is well until I skip tracks or scrub to a different position in the current track, which is sometimes (maybe one out of 5-10 times) causes a loud pop/click/burst of white noise. I've searched in this forum and elsewhere and could not find any obvious solution. I have attempted to test many different MPD settings in a systematic manner, but the pops persist.

Any advice on what I should try next?

Thanks and happy listening to all.

Could be some sort of incompatibility between the USB chipset used in the device and Linux. Do u know what chipset it uses?

AFAIK most commercial USB DAC's these days use XMOS chipsets.

According to https://www.audioquest.com/products/dragonfly-black, the chip is a “ESS ES9010 with minimum-phase fast roll-off filter”.

Thats the DAC chip. The USB receiver chip will be from another manufacturer for example XMOS.

So far I haven't been able to determine the USB chip used in the Black Dragonfly.

However, I tried switching the Black model for a Red one (https://www.audioquest.com/products/dragonfly-red), and all pops/clicks/scratches have been gone for several days. I still wish I knew how to avoid this issue on the Black DF, but for now I'm content.

Just posting this piece of information here in case it is useful to somebody.

Thanks again and happy listening to all.
