thumb-gen: Error: Unable to open file for reading:

My /var/moode.log file shows many errors of the form thumb-gen: Error: Unable to open file for reading:

thumb-gen: Error: Unable to open file for reading: <then a path to the file on the NAS windows PC>

When I do 

ls -l < to the same path that caused the error > 

I see the file permissions as -rwxrwxrwx  for the file in question. I am confused about why that file can't be opened by the thumb-gen routine?  Things do seem to work ok if I copy all the files to a local drive on the moOde, but that's not the goal at this time.

Any suggestions?

Check the permissions on the upstream directories and also the permission settings for that directory tree and SMB share on the Windows machine.
