What's the little reddish dot on the configuration menu "m" in the upper right corner? I though maybe it meant an update was available, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

It indicates the Clock Radio is set.

There is a separate notification icon that appears when an update is available. You can turn that option on in System Config.
