[SOLVED] USB sources not loading

Hi all . 

I've been fighting with my little pi zero . For some reason after a reinstallation of moode 32 bit using an 128 GB sd card  , the pi doesn't load the external usb sticks of 64 & 128 GB I have also attached .  Every night my rack containing the pi , the dac and and amplifier switches off to save the planet . When it comes back later next day , I open my browser on my android or win 11 and connect to Moode . Immidiatly at the library I can see the media (mp3s) of the sdcard . No USB or NAS connections . I hit the refresh library button , the spinner stops after a while , NAs and USB options appear BUT USB in folders mode are empty . 

 I tried to dig it a little but I'm short in Linux . One thing I notices is that the sticks are not mounted in /Media but I read is the norm in Linux but no pount is provided . Is this how it should be or should the sticks appear mounted in /USB  to be seen  ? In bold my two usb sticks . The GEMBIRD is actually an sd card reader with a 64GB sd card .

No .  I use a  simple 4 ports hub , one port for the pi , two for the sticks and one for a usb DAC which works just fine . 
From the moment that they appear connected , shouldn't they load as well  ? I see sda1  & sdb1 partitions  at the /dev but they appear unmounted for some reason . 
Could it be that they are simply recognised but there is not enough power to scan them and mount them  ?

You are powering the Pi from an unpowered hub ?

Far too many devices for the Pi USB supply. 
May all work off-peak but when draw exceeds supply you have problems.
Try a powered hub.

Power the Pi from a proper supply then add a powered hub to the Pi USB out and add the other devices to the powered hub.

Try a test with just one USB drive plugged into the hub. Reboot and see if its auto-mounted.

You are powering the Pi from an unpowered hub ?

No, my mistake . The pi uses official 3b power supply . The hub plugs into one of the two pi zero usb ports  and  provides 4 ports . I use one to connect and power an UCA 202 dac , and two slots fot usb sticks . 

Try a test with just one USB drive plugged into the hub. Reboot and see if its auto-mounted.

I also get an empty USB directory in the Library after update 

First stick out , second stick in  (kingston 128GB) in another port ( I noticed that whenever I plug in a stick the led flashes and I loose the ssh connection . So I guess it reboots  ?)

I take out the hub and plug in his place the kingston stick . Reboots again :

Funny thing is that with a previous installation both sticks worked flawlessly  and their content made it to the Library . But having a spare 256GB  sd card   I thought of reinstalling and use the spare space to store music files . And after that I got to have the extra sd space but mysteriously  I lost the sticks . I also  couldn't connect external HDD drives , although with their own power supply , but those devices never appeared after /lsblk . 

I know the pi zero is the least suitable pi for moode . But , since it's available why not give it a try ?

It's not that the Zero is the least suitable; it is you are drawing too much current from its USB.

I had the same problem some time ago, even with a Pi4 plugged with its PS, an external USB (USB-powered) DAC and an external 2.5" HDD (again, USB-powered): sometimes it didn't mount it; so I resorted to a powered 4-port USB hub (bear in mind that the PS of the Pi4 is capable of 3A, BTW).
Now I have an external USB DAC with its own PS, and the HDD has been replaced by a USB SSD NVMe drive, so I need the HUB no more, but this is not the point...

I suggest you use a powered hub; you are probably drawing something in the figure of 2A (the Zero + DAC + 2x USB drives...), Now, I don't know what current the PS of the Zero is capable of, but I somehow doubt it can make it to 2A...

It's not that the Zero is the least suitable; it is you are drawing too much current from its USB.

Could be  . I 've ordered  and excepting  a powered hub . BUT , isn't strange that the pi won't automount a single 128GB stick ? How can the same port , through a hub , power a dac which later feeds an amp but same port can't power a stick  alone    ?  And why did those sticks work with a smaller sd and have gone missing  ever since I mooved moody to a larger sd ? As master Yoda would say " Confused I am " .

There is a USB Auto-mount setting on System Config. IIRC it needs to be set to Devmon for the Zeros.

Spot on .  Just received the usb powered hub . Still the sticks wouldn't mount to /media . Then checked the forum again , saw your reply ,  switched to DevMon  .
Finally . Sda & sdb mount on to /Media and appear on the browser .  And all this with just the  new hub body and not the supply . Meaning that the pi can supply enough current to drive two sticks and usb dac .
