Clever use of an esp8266. I'd been thinking about using an RPi0w for similar purpose---bulkier, more resource-dependent, but also containing a cpu rather than a microcontroller. Just because it could run a full-up moOde browser doesn't mean I have to provision it that way
The eps8266 has SPI and I2C interfaces. Are you by any chance including a local LCD/OLED display as well as volume control?
