It's not a matter of it being easy. It's a matter of consistency, reproducibility and the ability to have a global system wide configuration compared to having to configure each app separately. I get that MPD is the main focus and playback method but I would think you'd want all apps to behave and be configured in the same way. They all have to go through ALSA that's the thing they all have in common in the end. ALSA is the logical configuration point.
