It's surprisingly complicated---because not all hard drives are the same.
The subject showed up in a number of posts to the Raspberry Pi Forum but it's hard to follow the threads. I saved this article several years ago which summarized the issues but I don't use any of the 3 recommended measures now that I've moved on to using only SSDs with my RPis. That is, when I use them at all, since I consider a separate NAS to be a better solution than strapping a large-capacity drive directly to my moOde player(s).
