I have one of these units somewhere. If I get the chance later today I'll boot it up and see if I can repro your issue.

seems to work now! screwed everything together again and removed all additional stuff (IR tft display and so on...). Maybe even good to know for you: Im running now completely on latest and (sometimes) greatest RaspbianOS with Kernel 5.10. The only thing missing is enabling SPI (enabling SPI in parallel leads to a kind of a chainsaw pattern visualizing the output on an oscilloscope), but as you wrote its already an unsupported image now.
