I've been hanging around the moOde forum since the days when it was a single thread on diyAudio.com, almost 6 years now. (Not bragging; there's several here who discovered moOde before I did.)
I don't recall any moOde user ever reporting these symptoms.
One thing in your description which intrigued me is
As my granddaughter would say, what the heck is that all about? What OS is that "another" pi running, what/where is the NFS server involved, what are those scripts doing, and what else is it doing.
If nothing else, you could to do some packet sniffing on your LAN (maybe you are experiencing packet storms, for example) but that's outside the scope of this forum.
