That isn't necessary or recommended (by me). I have thousands of AAC and ALAC files that all work fine and display artwork, and almost all were created using XLD.
One of the problems with FLAC is that its tagging ("FLAC tags" are also called "Vorbis comments") is so loosey-goosey, with no set of standard, minimum, or required tags. By contrast, AAC/ALAC tagging is quite well defined by Apple.
I think that it would be better to fix the files than just convert them to some other format.
