Completely agree, apart from the DIY fun, the self learning rewards are priceless.
After testing with Rpi/3B+ with Inno-maker HiFi DAC(PCM5122) with latest moOde(7.x) with excellent results, I'm planing to build an DIY ~3A linear PS as well and enclose it on an aluminum box, surprisingly the most expensive part is the stylish DAC aluminum box though.
Also FYI, moOde runs way faster/responsive and very reliable if booted from an USB 3.0 flash drive rather than the slow SD cards, if your Rpi support USB boot I will recommend it, personally I use the Samsung Flash Drive Fit since does not stick out much thus making it ideal for enclosed projects.
