The duration of the "noise" (because of its coloration I'll forgo calling it a hiss) depends on the crossfade interval whether 1s or 10s or whatever.

What appears to be the same issue was posted to the MPD repo back in February. It specifically names FLAC files. That's all I have on my system ATM but I can download some MP3 tracks to see if the issue is decoder-related. It also says "no problem with MP3 files." The original poster didn't respond to Max's requirement for detailed logs so the issue remains open with a "wating" tag.

If I can manage to gather sufficient data I'll comment on the issue (keeping in mind we're already a smidge behind the current MPD 0.22.11, always a sticking point for Max).
