After a bit of mulling over what I'd not tried yet, I swapped out the power supply for something with more oomph but ,no change. Then it dawned on me the only thing left was re-plugging/changing the USB cable.
Re-plugging did it. Interestingly, the original USB socket works, so I doubt it's a hardware fault. It could always be operator error and that the USB plug wasn't fully into the socket, or a slightly dirty contact? It would explain why it would just work, then stop again.
I'll power down tonight and try again tomorrow a.m. See what happens. I'll post back here and ask for some more help if the problem rears its head.
