As usual, the diyaudio thread wandered on and off the subject of your post but it contains one of the best analogies I've ever heard concerning hardware/software interfaces (USB in this case):

Few people look at the swan's legs as it serenely floats past in the river. The legs are working really hard to maintain the effect....

Glad the up-to-date kernel resolved your issue. With luck it won't open some other can of worms.
