Bluetooth on RasPi3B+ not working

After reinstalling the Allo Boss DAC everything is working correctly.  I wonder why it would not function prior to the removal of the DAC?  I will say the Bluetooth signal isn't the strongest one I have.  Can external USB dongles be used with the MoOde audio software?  I'm really only using Bluetooth at night so I don't wake my wife up with my speakers.  Using Focal headphones which pair pretty easily with everything I have.  It took me a couple of tries to get the headphones paired and connected to the Pi.  Now it connects every time and returns to the DAC board when disconnected.
