The use of USB keyboards and mice has always worked for me with an HDMI-connected display but IIRC it's not so straightforward on a DSI-connected display such as the RPi Touchscreen. Don't have one fired up at the moment to revisit this.

It works same whether the local display is connected via DSI or HDMI ports. I've use my Logitech kbd/trackpad with the Pi Touch no issues. Same with HDMI display.
