If I'm reading this thread correctly, it seems to me that the cover view shows the cover art (and optionally the playback position) of the currently playing track, but only if the track is not actually playing?

what is that... it doesn't. If nothing is playing it just shows "Not playing". If you play, but pause the track, it shoes "Not playing" under the bitdepth/samplerate of the track itself; in place of the converted stream for the output device; such as:
24bit 192kHz
32bit 192kHz
vs
24bit 192kHz
Not playing
