As an alternative, have you looked into USB volume controls aka volume knobs? They are a plug-n-play solution. I, for example, have a DROK brand knob I quite like. As I posted over a year ago in response to another user's query about encoders

When I was looking for a physical controller, I ended up choosing a USB Volume Control, in my case the DROK. There's a number of competitors. They present to the host USB port as an HID device. You can search this forum for old threads with subject lines like "Remote volume controls" and "Volume control by USB keyboard or volume knob" for users' discussions. My DROK has a great feel to its action.

The size of the DROK knob and its case and weight are intended to make it behave when sitting on a table or desk. There are competitors out there which as small enough they might be built into your own case as-is or one could experimenting in first removing the control's case.

There are also articles on sites such as instructables.com on building such a control and you might them helpful in thinking about how they used electrical or optical encoders.

As for using these USB controls with your moOde player, scroll down the m>Audio config screen to the Volume options section. You'll see the option to enable USB Volume knob.
