I moved the powered USB hub (minus the Wifi dongle) with USB SSD drive back over to the Zero W, and now after a couple of library updates , it is connected and playing files from the SSD.
Hardware: RPi Zero W | Allo Kali | ProtoDAC TDA1387 X8 | PGA2311 | Icepower 500ASP | Harbeth SHL5
Software: Moode 8.3.3
