If by "update" you mean you flashed a copy of 9.0.1 to a uSD card and booted it, then I'm guessing you didn't read the instructions for preparing the image. See the Setup Guide.
Shame on me. And to think I have always followed the instructions correctly since the official Raspberry imager was made mandatory with setting own user/password...
